Who We Are
SKILS+ intends to reduce the deeper involvement of juveniles in the juvenile justice system by developing a personal sense of value and self-worth. Through involvement with adult mentors, juveniles (under supervision or with disciplinary issues in school) will experience a caring environment where effective workforce skills are taught to improve the youth’s employability and contribution to society. This in turn can become a first level entry into advanced training at the upper levels.

Requirements and Qualifications
It is not necessary for student mentors to be college graduates, but it is imperative that they be knowledgeable in their field. The organization issues background checks, and wants these individuals to have the ability to mentor, not just teach, the kids how to become good citizens of our community. Individuals of good moral character, responsibility, and consistency are also favored.
Benefits and Opportunities
Benefits of working for this organization include bi-weekly pay, as well as several networking opportunities provided by the Director of Special Programs, Dr. Roger Miller.
Achievements
Working with children requires skill and compassion, individuals must be sure of themselves and their ability to work with youth while simultaneously providing a safe environment. One of the most positive achievements fostered by this program is the enhancement of ones ability to empathize with at-risk juveniles who come from various backgrounds. Being part of this program as a mentor promotes the importance of developmental assets and how they positively impact the growth of youth who are struggling. Having an optimistic outlook around the campers during the program was crucial because the mentors perspective of the program affects the campers frame of reference as well.
